I decided to write up this FAQ given some confusion over various issues with the new Daz Horse 2/using my current products with DH2. If you have other questions you would like to see answered here please email me.
Do the Classic Pack and Painted Ponies Pack available at Rendo work with the Daz Horse 2?
No and yes. Very clear huh?:)
NO they do not work “out-of -the-box”. The geometry of the DH2 is slightly different and more importantly, the UV mapping has been altered so that now it has separate body and head maps. That has also changed the naming of the parts of the DH2 that the MAT files need to work.
That said, it is said to be possible to use the Classic and Painted Ponies Packs with the DH2 – you will need these programs to do so:
Millennium Horse UV Set and Clone for Daz Horse 2 by CauriB
Currently you WILL have to apply the materials by hand. If I can find the time and get the programs to work, I will do a saved set of MATS for this and post on this website. I myself have not tried it yet so I am offering no guarantees it will work with Classic and/or Painted Ponies.
Also note these textures are 4+ years old. I am actually planning on retiring the Classic Pack soon as it is not anywhere near the quality of my later products. It was my first ever attempt at doing texture mapping and.. well.. it shows…I definitely WILL NOT be upgrading them directly to DH2 as the original files are too low res to work well with the new UV mapping and I would rather spend my time making new, much better quality textures than these.
Do the Pro Textures Packs for the Mil Horse at Daz work with the Daz Horse 2?
Same deal as above but with a BIG caveat- The Daz Horse 2 COMES with the Pro Textures updated to the Daz Horse 2 included. So if you buy the Daz Horse 2 you GET the updated Pro Textures with it. The Pro Pack was updated and sold to Daz to be the base textures for the Daz Horse 2, so I will not be doing any other updating of that product as I no longer own the rights to them.
The decision to sell Daz these textures was based on two things- one was the timeframe given to make product for the Daz Horse 2 launch- there just wasn’t enough time for me to start from scratch with all new coats of this amount and variety, also given having to create them for both Daz Studio and Poser this time. (The original Pro textures took me over 3 months to do and were specifically Poser based) Second I do believe in the high quality of the Pro Textures but I did not want to have to charge my loyal customers again for the amount of work I had to put into updating these (it was a lot, trust me. No sleep for weeks…) so selling them to Daz seemed a win-win for both myself and my loyal customers.
And FWIW back in 2004 when I bought the original Mil Horse Bundle I paid something in the vicinity of $70 for it. The Daz Horse 2 Bundles are a MUCH better deal:)
Do the CWRW Pose Pack 1 & 2 work with the Daz Horse 2?
Yes and no again:) The shaping and geometry of the DH2 is different enough that some oddnesses show up when applying the Mil Horse Poses to them. However they can be tweaked to work for the DH2 if so desired. I will post a video blog on this subject later this week. At this point in time I am undecided whether I will be updating these pose packs or not. Meantime they work GREAT with the Mil Horse and Foal, for whom they were specifically created for.
What about the Wings?
Updated Wings by Ken Gilliland are in the works. The new wings will come with all of the Pro Wing Textures updated/matching wings textures. The model and UV mapping for the new wings are quite different so no applying the old textures to the new wings- BUT you won’t need to anyway as they will be included/be the correct matching wing textures.
Do the “Wild West” Textures for the Western Saddle work with the new Western Saddle?
A resounding YES! Will Dupre preserved his UV mapping on the new saddle so my “Wild West” textures can be applied to the new saddle exactly as you would apply them to the old western saddle.
And last but not least….
I would just like to restate my philosophy in making these products for the general public. First and foremost I create them for myself for use in my own personal and commercial artwork. If they aren’t good enough for me and my work, they will never see the light of day in the open market. The amount of time that goes into these products is staggering. I am not blessed with the speed some vendors seem to possess in creating their products. If I was being paid by the hour I’d likely be making less than minimum wage:) I will do my best to update products I feel will be worthy of updating. Some just will not be due to their lack of resolution or detail etc. They were made specifically for the Mil Horse and work just fine for him.
I do want to thank all of my customers for their support over the years. It is important to me that you find the products to be of a very high quality and good value for the money. If they cost more than some other similar lower priced products all I can say is you get what you pay for. I will not compromise quality. That said, if you buy one of my products at Daz they do come with a full 30-day money back guarantee. Unfortunately at Rendo that is not the case. That is out of my control.
Again, contact me by email with any specific questions you may have on any of my products or if you feel you have an issue that should be added to this FAQ.
Thank you, and Happy Rendering!
